Hayfever injection
The benefits of a steroid injection for Hay Fever
Severe hayfever can cause a lot of discomfort and have a negative effect on people’s day-to-day life.
If you have severe symptoms that fail to respond to other treatments, such as oral antihistamine medications, topical eye drops and so on, it is possible to book an appointment to discuss a depo steroid injection as an alternative.
Hayfever injection is a corticosteroid injection which has anti-inflammatory properties. It suppresses the immune system and stops the natural pollen response becoming uncontrolled.
We recommend the use of antihistamine tablets such as cetirizine, chlorphenamine or loratadine alongside a steroid nasal spray and mast-cell stabilizer eye drops as first line treatment. These are available on the NHS via the Common Ailment Scheme, please book an appointment or enquire in store.
Kenalog is a one dose intra-muscular injection that can suppress hayfever symptoms for 2-8 weeks.
Exclusions include:
- Under 18 or over 70 (Co-Vid 19 protocol)
- If the person has or recently had cancer.
- Glaucoma
- Taking medication that could interfere with Kenalog (steroid)
- If you are diabetic, have high blood pressure or other heart problems.
- Diagnosed with Osteoporosis.
- Suffer with a stomach ulcer
